Do you know how to perform an electronic vehicle transfer?

The Tax Administration Superintendent (SAT) in 2017 implemented a new modality for conducting electronic vehicle transfers with the aim of reducing the influx of users at Tax Agencies. This new procedure involves performing the vehicle transfer online through authorized notaries. Over the years, this process has become easier for users as it is fast, simple, and eliminates the need to visit a Tax Agency, requiring only a visit to a notary.

But have you heard of this new modality? Do you know how it works? In this article, we will address all your doubts and explain how easy it is to carry out this procedure.

The electronic vehicle transfer can only be carried out before a notary authorized by the Tax Administration Superintendent (SAT). As mentioned earlier, this institution maintains a "Notary Registry," which can be consulted on their website. By accessing this link, you can verify and have certainty when conducting the procedure.

What are the requirements for performing the electronic vehicle transfer?

  • Notary authorized by SAT

  • Vehicle owner

  • Vehicle buyer

  • Virtual Agency in SAT (both the owner and buyer must have a virtual agency; otherwise, the procedure cannot be carried out)

  • Tax Identification Number (NIT)

  • Updated Taxpayer Registry (RTU)

  • No outstanding obligations

  • Electronic distinctive elements (electronic certificate of ownership and electronic vehicle registration card)

  • Payment of the Vehicle Circulation Tax for the current year

  • It is important to comply with the principle of "unity of act," as it is essential for the owner and buyer to be present before the notary to carry out the corresponding fingerprint registration and signatures.

What documents do you need to present to the notary?

  • Electronic vehicle registration card

  • Electronic certificate of ownership

  • Original and color photocopy of the owner's valid DPI (national identification document)

  • Original and color photocopy of the buyer's valid DPI

  • If it is a legal entity, the original and color photocopy of the representation (owner/buyer)

What are the expenses involved?

  • SAT-8028 form for the virtual agency, valued at Q. 60.00

  • SAT-8611 form for the transfer process, valued at Q. 120.00

  • SAT-2311 form for the Value Added Tax (IVA), valued at Q. 500.00 if the vehicle is a model year 2018 or later. *This value may vary depending on the vehicle's model year.

  • Notary fees

How long does the electronic vehicle transfer process take?

The process takes approximately 15 minutes, but the time may vary depending on the SAT system and internet connectivity.

What does the electronic vehicle transfer process involve?

As mentioned before, the procedure is quick and easy. Both the vehicle owner and the buyer must visit an authorized notary and provide the necessary documentation. The notary will verify the documentation, fill out and pay the SAT forms mentioned earlier. The SAT system will automatically generate an endorsement that needs to be signed by the owner and buyer. Then, the notary will record the fingerprints of the owner and buyer. Before completing the electronic transfer process, the owner and buyer must access their virtual agencies and authorize the electronic vehicle transfer (the subject of the transfer). During this step, they will need to enter the NIT of the notary, owner, and buyer. Once this step is completed, the SAT system will allow the transfer to take place, and the new electronic distinctive elements (vehicle registration card and certificate of ownership) will appear in the buyer's virtual agency.

It is important to take the following precautions when carrying out the electronic vehicle transfer process:

  • Do not proceed with the transfer without the presence of the vehicle owner; the principle of unity of act must be followed.

  • Do not share your virtual agency password with anyone (only you should have access to it).

  • Do not share the electronic distinctive elements of your vehicle with anyone (only with the notary during the electronic vehicle transfer process).

We provide this warning because there have been cases where malicious individuals have sought ways to commit vehicle theft through this new modality. For this reason, visit your trusted notary and always verify their authorization by SAT. If you don't have trusted notaries or need professional assistance with a vehicle transfer, please contact us.
